How To Make A Gourd Bird House

A gourd bird house is a good addition to any bird watcher's backyard. This is a simple type of bird house and most people will be able to build it. Building a gourd bird house is also a good project for children, but they will need some adult supervision along the process.

Essential tools and materials

When you decide to build a gourd bird house, there are some tools and materials that you need to get first. They are a large and dried gourd, exterior spray paint, sealer, a power drill with a 3/8 drills bit, a scrubbing pad, and an eye screw. After you collect all these tools and materials, then you can start building the gourd bird house.

The process of building a gourd bird house

The first thing that you need to do is to prepare the gourd. You should dry and clean it and also make sure that it is large enough for birds to nest in. Then you can drill a hole into it to allow enough space for birds that you want to attract. You should not use moldy gourds for building a bird house. However, if this is the only one that you have, you can easily clean it. The most important thing is to be sure that the gourd is hard and dry before moving further.

Once you drill a large entry hole, you should also drill around three smaller holes on the bottom that will act as drain holes. After you finish this drilling process, you need to clean the inside. Along this process of drilling and cleaning, you should wear a mask because the mold and dust from the gourd can cause respiratory problems, especially if you spend a long period of time in preparing the bird house.

The next step is to put the eye screw into the gourd bird house. You can place it somewhere on the top so it will be easy for hanging. The last step is to use your creativity to decorate the bird house. You may want to leave it natural and unpainted, but you still need to use sealant to protect it from rainwater. After you satisfy with the appearance of the bird house, you can hang it on a strategic place and wait for birds to visit. As you can see, the whole process in making a gourd bird house is simple and it can become a great project that you can do with the your family.
