How To Build Your Own Finch Bird House

Placing a finch bird house is a good idea to make your backyard feels livelier. Finches are actually small and colorful birds that are easily found in many backyards in the United States. If you want to attract these birds, you can start with building a proper finch bird house for them. This article will explain briefly the things that you need to consider before building the bird house.

Selecting the right type of wood

The perfect material to build a finch bird house is wood. Do not build the bird house using metal or plastic because finches prefer fine woods. Cedar, fir, cypress, redwood, and birch are good options for your consideration. Treated woods are not advisable and it is better to buy plain and simple wood. You need to make sure that you have enough wood to build a bird house about six inches high and six inches long.

The characteristics of finches

Finches are picky birds when it comes to select a place to stay and nest. They do not like enclosed houses and thus when you build the finch bird house, you may want to leave three sides open. You should use wood adhesives to attach the wood together. Alternatively, waterproof nails can be used for this purpose. Do not use ordinary nails because they will become rusty overtime, which will be very dangerous for the finches.

If you use cypress wood to build the finch bird house, you do not need to paint or stain it. Other types of wood should be painted to a nice earth tone color. The feathers of the finches are bright and you do not want to add extra brightness. Most of them also prefer earth tones.

After you finish building the finch bird house, you should put it above a pole so predators cannot gain access to it. You should never put it near a ledge or bush because predators can jump up and reach the bird house. The proper height of the pole is around eight feet to make sure that no predator can jump and reach the bird house. The pole should be made from metal and greased with petroleum jelly. This will prevent creatures from climbing it. The feeders can also be placed on this mounted pole and greased with a similar fashion. If you provide a safe and comfortable finch bird house, finches will be happy to stay and they will return every year.
